Rescue Me ID: 18-05-17-00400Blackjack (male)

Maltese Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Health: Neutered, Blind

**Owner Surrender Disclaimer: These are blind and visually impaired dogs that are living in homes, but their owners can no longer keep them. These dogs are with their owners, and are not in BDRA foster homes. We do our best to screen these dogs, but make no guarantees regarding the information posted.** 'Please know that as much as we wish we could, we are unable to help with transport.' Name: Blackjack aka Jake aka Benjamin Buttons Age: 16 Sex: Male (confirmed neutered) Breed: Maltese/Shitzu mix - 14.5 lbs. Location: Melbourne, FL Vet Info: Blackjack is confirmed neutered and up to date on his vaccinations ... (Read More)with the exception of distemper (too old to have the vaccination anymore). He is HW negative, also on preventative and has cataracts. Owner Info: Blackjack was with his 'Dad' for 15 year until his death a year ago. His 'Mom' passed away five years ago. He was 'a wonderful, loving, and very protective companion to her. When she passed away five years ago, Jack began to get a bit more aggressive. I think he really just missed his 'mom' and his 'dad' did not give him the attention that she did. When Blackjack was younger he was very 'possessive' of his owners but has mellowed out with age. You just need to stay away from his face. He has to be muzzled to be groomed. He has also recently attempted to bite a woman.' Blackjack is an indoor dog with the run of the house, he is not housebroken. Blackjack is leash trained and enjoys walks but ' He used to be quite the roamer and fast but old age has slowed him down.' Blackjack is not food aggressive. Blackjack is good with men, women and teenagers but family has concerns about him being around younger children. Blackjack has never had any experience being around cats. It is unclear how Blackjack would be around other dogs, his experience so far has been only with one more aggressive dog. Blackjack has cataracts which it is believed is causing total blindness. His head also is cocked to one side. Other than that he is 'very healthy'. Blackjack's temporary owner feels that Blackjack would make a 'great companion for an older, retired person'. (Less)

Animal ID: 18-082Sophie (female)

Maltese Mix    Age: Adult

Health: Heartworm Positive

Meet Sophie. She is 9 years old and weighs 7.6 lbs. Sadly, Sweet Sophie has tested positive for heartworm disease. She is being fostered in Palm Coast, FL UPDATED BIO 05/24/2018: Sophie is one of 26 dogs who was pulled by a sister rescue group 6 weeks ago from a horrendous hoarding/backyard breeding situation. She is one of the 10 dogs that UYR was able to bring into United Yorkie Rescue. All of these dogs were terribly neglected and medically-needy and were all living in an unsafe, unsanitary and over-crowded home with very little human interaction. Sophie had this to say recently: Hi - My name Sophie, I so happy that I was rescued. I ... (Read More)lived my whole life in a really bad - and sad - place. There was never enough food or water cuz' there was so many other doggies there. While I was there, I kept having beautiful baby puppies, but I never got to keep any of them, and that made me even sadder. Now for some good news - I have a really great foster mom who lets me sit on her lap whenever I want. She gives me kisses and tells me how much she loves me and how special I am. Before I came into foster mom's home, no human ever told me how special I was and gave me kisses. I was never given a bath either, but now I love taking baths cuz' it makes me feel so good afterwards. And another wonderful thing - I never knew what 'treats' were until now, but I sure do love them. Foster mom tells me that I have to stay with her for a while since I was in really poor condition when I came to her. I have to get healthy enough to go through heartworm treatment and get spayed and have a dental. She said I will probably lose all my teeth, but that's okay with me since my mouth hurts sometimes and she said it will feel so much better. I do have a teeny-tiny heart murmur, so that needs to be monitored. Will you please stay tuned while I'm getting all healthy? Because then I will be looking for my forever home. UPDATED BIO 04/20/2018: Sophie continues to do well in her foster home in spite of several on-going medical issues. In addition to being HW+, Sophie also has a Grade I/VI heart murmur which is mostly insignificant, but should be monitored. She is also being treated for a UTI due to her frequent urination and dribbling, bless her heart. She will have a dental once she is healthy enough to do so and will likely lose all her teeth due to sheer neglect. There is no doubt that this precious little girl has endured a lot of emotional trauma and neglect in her life. It has been determined that she does have impaired hearing. Sophie also has bilateral cataracts but is able to see shadows and gets around the house just fine. Foster Mom said that this lovely girl is a total lovebug and a sweetheart. Once she has gone through her HW treatment and had a dental, she will be ready for adoption. Sophie's needs are but a few - she needs love and a stable home who understands her special needs and will adore her - forever and ever. PLEASE NOTE the following special circumstances: - Adoption applications are being accepted for Sophie; however, please keep in mind that shehas tested positive for heartworms. This means that Sophie must endure 4-5 months of heartworm treatment before she can go into her forever home. UYR follows the recommended treatment protocol recommended by the American Heartworm Society. Heartworm Treatment is very expensive and will cost approximately $800-$1,000 per dog. Currently, 4 out of the 10 dogs taken in with Sophie tested positive for heartworms. Please consider a donation to help UYR continue to rescue and rehabilitate other dogs with heartworms. - Please be patient with our process in considering adoption applications for Sophie as our primary interest is supporting her during her heartworm treatment. Once she has completed treatment, she will be altered and receive any additional vaccinations needed. Our primary goal at this time is getting Sophie healthy so that she can continue to enjoy a wonderful life in a loving, forever home. - UYR is reaching out to our friends, supporters and generous donors in the hopes of raising the thousands of dollars it will cost our group to get Sophie healthy, as well as the 9 other dogs from the same hoarding/backyard breeding situation. They not only need to have their vaccinations updated, be neutered or spayed and have extensive labs, but they also need to emotionally heal from years of neglect. For the ones like Sophie that are HW+, they will soon begin treatment which will last 4-5 months. If you have been moved by Sophie's story and her courage and resilience, please consider making a donation to UYR to cover vetting expenses and support our organization as we begin the long process of rehabilitating these precious little dogs.
